Ziel dieses Prinzips ist es, Tierversuche vollständig durch geeignete Alternativmethoden zu ersetzen (Replace), die Zahl der Versuche und der darin verwendeten Tiere auf ein sinnvolles Minimum zu reduzieren (Reduce) sowie die Leiden der Tiere in den Versuchen auf das unerlässliche Maß zu beschränken (Refine).
