How Ferdinand Feiler started their t-shirt journey
What do you have in mind for the style and theme of the t-shirt?
I want a t-shirt that my students can be proud to wear. That can help them explain about their "crazy new hobby" to their friends.
I know nothing about visual styles - but I like the the t-shirt to go well with my logo.
Many young Chinese love flamboyant clothing.
Since Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is very new to China I want the t-shirt to make a statement to explain what ground fighting is all about. For this, I will use a famous BJJ quote:
缠斗。无论你是谁，只要在地面，就是到了我的地盘。这是我的海洋，我是海中鲨。到了我的海洋，敌人呛水挣扎 - Carlos Machado
The Translation of which is: "After the clinch, it doesn't matter what happens, one way or another, we're going to hit the ground, and we'll be in my world. The ground is my ocean, I'm the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim." - Carlos Machado
If at all possible, especially if you speak Chinese, try to arrange the characters in a way resembling a Chinese poem. Symetry in how the characters are written is very pleasing to the Chinese eye.
To clarify, I mainly want the Chinese version of the quote written on the t-shirt. If you figure out a way of writing it both in English and Chinese and make it look good, that's great though.
What to avoid
Eventhough we are teaching Jiu-Jitsu, it is extremely important that we don't give anyone the idea it has anything to do with Japan or Japanese Martial Arts, as most Chinese unfortunately are not too fond of their neighbour country. We teach BRAZILIAN (Gracie) Jiu-Jitsu.
For trademark reasons, the word Gracie may not be written on the T-shirt. China GJJ is as close as its allowed to get.
