Check out orange.yellow's Print or packaging design contest…
We've created a brand spankin' new photobook application for people to capture digital memories as shelvable, colorful photobooks. "We" are an online digital commercial print company based in sunny California.
What's your vision?
[ NOTE ] THIS CONTEST IS NOT THE FULL PROJECT. The full project is worth $5000.00 over a few weeks. We will pick one or many designers depending on submissions. [ INTRODUCTION ] For this project, we are looking for photobook backgrounds that our app users can use when they design their photobook. When the users design their photobook, they will be able to change between the backgrounds that you design. After they check out and purchase the books, we will print these books on our presses, and ship them out. For this first project, OrangeYellow is looking for 1 sample photobook background for our users in our application. We are looking for designs that will look good both on screen and print. For our application launch in a few weeks, we will require between 100 - 150 deliverables split between a few designers. We are using 99designs as an audition for designers. We will award those designers who we end up continuing work with. [ CONTENT ] The designs for this project can be simple. Take a look at Shutterfly.com's "simple path" application in their photobooks product. We like their "general" designs. The designs seem to be simple, but add character to the user's photobook. For the scope of this project, we think you will save time if you focus on page designs that are geometrically patterned, have repeated simple illustrations, or have simple illustrations. During the project, your page design must have photos and captions to demonstrate how your background will look with photos on it. [ COMMENT ABOUT PRINT QUALITY ] The criteria that matters most in this design is that the designs look good with print designs. After project finish, we will notify designers whose work we're interested in. We will require a pdf submission (You will use a watermark for your protection) which will be printed before we award the money. [ SUMMARY OF FINAL DELIVERABLES WHEN YOU WIN ] FULL BLEED SIZE (your files): 10" x 12" (See below to see why we want large bleeds) TRIM SIZE: 8" x 11" RESOLUTION: 300 PPI COLOR SPACE: CMYK FULL BLEED: YES TRIM MARKS: NO [ ADDITIONAL NOTES ABOUT OUR PRODUCT ] Our photobooks will be bound as saddle-stitched, perfect bound, and wire-o. The covers will be either 80 lb. glossy cover or 100 lb. glossy cover. The interiors will likely be 80 lb. glossy text, pending further product testing. [ NOTE ABOUT DIMENSIONS ] Keep in mind that your designs will be cropped, shrunk, and panned to sell: 8"x11" portrait photobooks, 8"x8" photobooks, and 5"x7" landscape photobooks. [ OUR PLANS FOR POST PROJECT WORK ] After the 99designs project ends, we will award one or many winners and the winner will provide the deliverables. After that happens, we have two more phases. The "second phase" will be to complete the first theme. To complete a theme, we would like a front cover design, a total of 8 background designs, a back cover design, and a spine (for softcover books). Provided that the first theme was constructed well, we'll move on to the "third phase". If we like your work during the 99designs project, we will award each winning designer an additional $305.00 to complete their theme (7 more backgrounds, and front/back cover designs). In summary - one theme will be worth $500.00. The "third phase" will be to complete all the themes we want for launch. Over the course of about a month to a month and a half, we would like to roll out between 10-15 themes (10 backgrounds each). We will launch with a couple designs in a few weeks, and contine to roll them out over the following weeks. We have a total of 10 themes (each theme contains 10 designs), and each theme is worth $500.00. This totals to be a sum of $5000.00 of work. We'd like to focus the work onto one or two designers.
[ THEMES ] Pick one theme out of the following, and design all your backgrounds to fit that theme: autumn, birthday, general (e.g. black & tan, pretty in pink, warm colors), romance, or family/children. [ AUDIENCE ] We anticipate that people will buy our photobooks as gifts for other people, and to record their photo memories. We anticipate families purchasing photobooks of their children, purchasing photobooks as gifts between couples, for people to record their days/nights/vacations with friends. Each group will have different preferences. When you choose a theme, try to design for things that are more universal and general; not something niche and quirky. [ EXAMPLES OF WHAT WE LIKE ] Take a look at Shutterfly's simple path application for their photobooks, or mixbook. Our initial application will be like simple path, and not at all with the complexity that mixbook has. Take a look at what other photobook applications have done, and the research might give you ideas on how to design good looking, simple designs. Some of their good designs are incredibly simple, and little more than basic patterns and textures.
