Friends of the Blue Star Trail is an all volunteer organization located in Casco Township, Allegan County, Michigan. Its purpose is to assist area governmental units, the county parks department and the county road commission in the development and promotion of a proposed 20 mile recreation pathway.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
The project is to design a 5" wide x 7" high (scalable to 8" x 11") trail marker sign to be placed at intervals along a the route of a ten-foot wide, off-road multi-use recreational pathway connecting the cities of South Haven and Saugatuck-Douglas, MI along the shore of Lake Michigan; the trail will appeal to walkers, out-doors enthusiasts, X-country skiers, bikers, no motorized vehicles will be allowed.
The Blue Star Trail brand needs to reflect a certain sense of place, history, nature, and connection.
a.) The place is Western Michigan shoreline, running through wildly productive agricultural lands, featuring berries of all types but particularly blueberries, peach and apple orchards, and vineyards.
b.) The history of the trail is tied to the history of the Federal Blue Star Highway and the old port towns of South Haven, Pier Cove, and Singapore/Saugatuck-Douglas. These were depots for the shipping of timber and farm produce to Great Lake cities and beyond.
c.) The non-motorized trail is intended to be a four-season biking, hiking, walking, skiing trail, bringing families out into the beautiful and unique natural environment here.
d.) Finally, the central idea of the trail is connectivity, specifically from South Haven to Saugatuck. It's not quite as dramatic as the Union Pacific and Central rail hookup in Ogden Utah, but it has the same goal, connection.
