Clive Wright got their new app design by running a design contest:
Help us create the basis for a world class superior user interface for a tablet just for seniors
Check out Clive Wright's App design contest…
We are creating an enhanced operating environment for tablet computers (7" size) that will be simpler to use for less-technology-savvy people, in particular senior people aged 70 and over. The system will be supportable by trusted family members so that Mom, for example, doesn't need to worry about software updates or strange / complex messages appearing. It will be launched with 5 built-in apps : 1. Voice calling, 2. Video calling, 3. Voice messaging, 4. Photo sharing and 5. Calendar reminders for medications and other appointments. Additional apps are planned to be introduced over time. The operating system and user controls have been modified so that the user has an immersive experience that should never result in them being exposed to the "computer" within. (Although the tablet is based on Android, none of the regular Android parts are visible – so the user interface doesn't need to comply with any style guides for Android apps and is basically a blank canvas.) We believe this makes this design challenge unique and exciting.

Utility: The designer must bear in mind the age group of the users - 70 years and above. Their eyesight may be somewhat impaired. Our research shows that older people do not like bright reds (alarming) or bright yellows (tends to saturate and not look like a colour). Icons and fonts need to be large, bold and clear, without being childlike or insulting their intelligence. Contrast between icons and background should be strong. Style: When a product is for seniors, the temptation is to use a very utilitarian style. Yet we want our product to have impact with both seniors, the family members (often aged 40-65) and the market in general. We are looking for something cool as well as easy to see, read and know what it means.
Teedo is the name of our product - the name is designed to avoid sounding like a product only for seniors, it is for the whole family.
We are looking for designs for two screens in this contest (with a number of other screens needing design work in future contracts): 1. The main "launcher" home screen which allows the senior to launch one of 5 built-in applications (details below) using big iconic buttons with text labels. 2. A "start of day" screen which pops up when the senior first touches or picks up the tablet on a day, which provides a pleasant greeting and gives them some relevant information each day. 1. MAIN LAUNCHER HOME SCREEN Should have 5 (with space for a 6) buttons. The buttons should each have large icons with text labels to indicate their functions, so that the senior can readily identify what function each one does (remembering that seniors are less familiar with standard app icons than younger people): a) Voice call - like making a telephone call, this button will lead to a screen allowing them to select someone to talk to and place that call b) Video call - like the voice call above except for video calls (something a senior may not be very familiar with, so design of the icon here is important) c) Messages - so that the senior can leave or listen to recorded voice messages from or for their family members d) Photos - so that the senior can view photos shared by their family members e) Reminders - this is where the senior can view a list of upcoming calendar events such as medication reminders, doctors appointments and upcoming birthdays Additionally, the corners and margins should be used to house: i) a button featuring elements of the Teedo logo - the function of which is to bring the user back to this main launcher screen from any other screen (i.e.: it is present on every screen so should probably be in a corner, say the top right, and not take much more space than is needed for a senior to press it reliably). Perhaps in green to indicate being connected to the service (other icon colours would indicate problems with the service) ii) a battery charging status and level for the tablet's battery (super-simple) iii) Time, day and date 2. START OF DAY SCREEN This is the first screen the elder sees when they tap or use the device in the morning - should be friendly but not too busy. We would like to include the following: a) The current time b) Welcoming words such as "Good morning!" and "Today is Saturday July 5, 2014" c) A panel containing today's weather including a weather icon, type of weather (e.g.: sunny) and high temperature of the day d) If there are new (unseen) photos in the device then it should have a panel saying something like "You have 8 new photos" and a thumbnail (small) photo that will change between the various new photos. e) An OK button to dismiss the screen f) A product icon (Teedo icon - attached) SCREEN SIZE Screen is 7" diagonally, and is 1920 x 1200 pixels in resolution and always held in landscape mode. FINAL DELIVERABLES Two screen layout designs (as described above): * Vector versions of all graphics (AI or other acceptable format) * Full size bitmaps (PNG or other acceptable format)
What to avoid
Colours and contrast combinations that are difficult for seniors to see (specifically bright reds and yellows), providing a good level of contrast within icons will definitely help. Icons or shapes only recognizable to younger audiences.
