trae4nato got their new app design by running a design contest:
Design winning iPhone app for Hilars.com Social Media
Check out trae4nato's App design contest…
Hilars (Hilars.com in BETA) allows a real-time functional social media platform using GPS where users can report and share events (weather, crime, news, etc) that affect many vast communities, schools, municipalities or large areas. The application serves as avenue for the average citizen, first responders, fire and rescue, or large demonstrators to get the most accurate and update information to the web. Current social media platforms are cluttered with miscellaneous links and chatter about the non-essentials in life. Hilars will be different. Using GPS users will be able to post and update thus informing other users of an upcoming event or location that should be avoided. It's a social 'Public Service Announcement' for missing children, large concerts, extreme weather and more. Using scalable updates Hilars.com will provide a real-time map of the world allowing users and non-registered users click on a general location and see what is happening.
Hilars will have a minimalistic and clean look. The application will rely heavily on a combination of light grey, and subtle light and mid blue. White is the best background color for text entry. Use black for the main text entry color type. Items should look compartmentalized and obvious that they are different than the next. This application will avoid flashy graphics. The preferred text is Arial but your choice of an italicized font for selection. Logins can be given to view website.
From the home screen, after the user has logged in, users will be able to post an update and they are required to select one of the main topics "Current Events, Weather, Avoid, Emergencies, Missing" This is called "Your Stream" and it's a requirement. From their stream user will be able to post. Users who are their friends can also reply. Users will also have the option to type in their status, the name of a state (New York, Arizona) and Hilars will automatically populate it as a linkable tag thus grouping events by location. This will eventually expand to cities. When a user "Posts" their status it will show on their 'Stream' or page including the one picture that is currently allowed. It will be public. Pictures are allowed in their posts. There will be a persistent search located at the top where users can search for other users by user name. Visually it will have the collage, at the top, that's featured on the user's profile (ask for a login). This particular page will be the hub for many users and is the most important. The second screen will be the "World Events" where it will have the linkable subcategories Current Events, Weather, Avoid, Emergencies, Missing. These categories should be right under each other, not next to one another. Each category will need to have a small picture indicating it's about "weather, avoid, emergency, etc" Every post that was posted with weather, for instance will show the posts about weather once you click the "weather" category. The weather screen itself is not a requirement or screen that must be created. This second screen is just the screen with all the main categories. The third and final will be the Notification screen that will show unread or unchecked messages with a red number indicating the amount of private messages you have from users. The number of unread messages will be persistent on every screen irrespective of which screen you're on or selection but the third screen will have a threaded message where you can view, mark as read, delete, reply. The layout of the messages screen should have a small picture of the sender and below it their message. All screens have a minimalistic and obvious navigation at the top for users to easily go from one screen to the next.
What to avoid
Round and bubble type corners should be avoided. Avoid any FB type of blue, yellow, green and purple. Avoid cartoonish or vibrant colors. No underlining of text. Avoid outlining pictures with huge borders. Small borders with insignificant light grey or even black might suffice.
