Chris Grove got their new app design by running a design contest:
Create a contemporary iPhone communications and commerce app

An app for parents to stay connected with their children’s classroom within a closed circle. Share messages, media (photos/video), fund raisers, classroom supplies, teacher wish lists, and more within a small, closed group.
Clean and contemporary. Easy to use for non-technical users. Aesthetic but limited color palette. The attached logo may change later, so the colors do not have to be matched with it. Geared towards adults aged 20 to 45 with early elementary school-aged children. See attached pictures for wireframes. Should conform to standard iOS user interactions, but room for customization of colors, gradients, and icons. Icons shown in wireframes are for illustration only, willing to consider anything that implies the correct concept.
The home screen is an infinite scrolling list of dated items, in order with most recent on top. These items may include announcements, chats, message, photos/videos, events, and others (see wireframes). Selecting any of these will navigate to a detail screen for that item. A slide-out menu to the left gives options for user account and profile, settings, and also some alternate views to the home screen (calendar, photos, supplies). A slide-out menu to the right provides options to compose new items. For purposes of this contest we are looking at screens to support one specific user flow, browsing and purchasing items on a wish list. This will include the main screen, the left-hand slide out menu, the wish list detail screen (browse and add items to cart), the checkout screen (buy), and the receipt screen. Wireframes for each of these 5 screens are attached. Willing to consider variations in the screen layout within the guidelines given here.
What to avoid
Clutter, non-standard UI elements, kaleidoscope of colors.

And then… they selected a winner!
I've worked with designers and developers for the past 15 years, including managing teams of in-house designers and working with contractors. I've had the pleasure of working with some great people but I have to say Sasha is by far the most talented, dedicated designer I've ever worked with. He is a huge talent. He has a great sense of balancing the business objective with the final design to carry the message. He truly cares about what the outcome is. He's self-motivated. If he doesn't know something, he'll learn it on his own, and he needs very little direction. He nails the concept on the first try nearly every project we work on. Oh, and he also happens to be a grateful, kind human being and easy to work with. I can't say enough. I will continue to work with Sasha as long as he's available! (Some day he'll be famous and I'll have to find a backup.)
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
