Santa Monica History Museum
We are in the process of relocating our museum to a brand new state-of-the-art facility in the heart of downtown Santa Monica, California. We are changing our name from Santa Monica Historical Society Museum to Santa Monica History Museum. We will be a premier attraction/destination for residents, tourists, and researchers. We are not the typical small Historical Society Museum. The new museum is unique in that it’s much larger and expanding. It will be the crown jewel of Santa Monica.
Santa Monica is and has historically been a lively, energetic, cutting-edge, forward-thinking, interactive and dynamic city. But, it also is a wonderful place to enjoy a classic, seaside Southern California lifestyle with its beautiful coastline, ocean breeze, and year-round sunshine.
We've been collecting and preserving Santa Monica's history since 1975. Our collection consists of thousands of rare photographs, artifacts, memorabilia, and archives. Our museum is the only place where people can discover, explore, experience, and enjoy the diverse and colorful history of Santa Monica.
Our new museum will feature a state-of-the-art hands-on interactive permanent exhibits gallery, a changing exhibit gallery, multi-media research library, and educational programs and events that educate the public about Santa Monica’s diverse and colorful history.
Local residents are our primary audience because they have a personal interest in the city’s history. Residents make up the majority of our members/patrons, and they visit our museum several times a year. A secondary, but very important, audience is tourists. The city of Santa Monica is a major and very desirable vacation destination for national and international tourists year-round. We want to capture their interest and be part of their vacation itinerary. A third target audience is the youth/children. We believe in investing in our youth’s education of Santa Monica’s history so that they can grow to appreciate where they live and have a sense of community and belonging within our city. We give free docent-led tours of our museum exhibits to students (primarily grades 3 to 12) and youth organizations.
Most importantly, the logo must be very attractive and desirable for merchandising on museum retail products (shirts, books, bags, key-chains, etc.). It must work well visually in both large and small scales, and many applications: business cards, stationary, website, coffee mugs, t-shirts, lapel pins, brochures, video, large banners, etc.
We are looking for a simple and eye-catching logo that communicates the idea that people will have a fun, engaging, interactive, and dynamic experience at our first-class history museum. We would like to see designs with colors that evoke the liveliness of the city of Santa Monica. We especially like the idea of incorporating blue as a main color. You may also consider using a historical design.
The logo must include the museum name, Santa Monica History Museum, but should be designed so that we can use the logo and name together or separately. You can use our entire name or our abbreviated name, SMHM.
We do not want cartoon images, juvenile looking designs, or any shading or gradations of colors.
We need final designs delivered in both color and black & white versions with font and pantone color names; and in Adobe Illustrator, JPEG (high-res), and PDF formats.
