stephen.woodley got their new logo design by running a design contest:
KBAs - globally significant biodiversity areas
Check out stephen.woodley's Logo design contest…
What is a KBA? – Key Biodiversity Areas are sites that are irreplaceable for conserving nature (biodiversity). Plainly put, they are sites that are globally vital for life. Biodiversity is very patchily distributed on our planet and KBAs represent the very important patches. Here are few general examples: • The only nesting site for Whooping Cranes, located in a swamp in northern Canada. • A large tiger reserve in India with an important population of Bengal Tigers • A small Caribbean Island with an endemic lizard population • A rare forest type in the Peruvian highlands • A regular mass spawning aggregation of groupers in the Pacific What is the KBA Partnership? We are a partnership of eleven of the world’s leading nature conservation organizations with an ambitious new partnership to map, monitor and conserve the most important places for life on earth. We want to clearly tell people where globally significant sites are located, so they can be conserved. The partnership wants the brand be about nature conservation and to: • Create a common currency for sites that contribute significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity • Illustrate the fact that a broad coalition of environmental conservation organizations is behind the common currency • Instill pride and recognition in the identification and management of KBAs • Promote the fact that KBAs are identified through a rigorous scientific process • Promote the adoption of the concept of KBAs and the application of KBA information by target audiences Our Core Message Our core message is that these sites are key places on the planet that we need to care for and steward. Biodiversity is distributed very unevenly on our planet and some sites are vital. KBA Branding Considerations The KBA brand will be used in the usual ways; on letterhead, business cards, websites and reports. However the brand will also be used to identify sites; on signs in wild areas, at park entrances, in communities or wherever KBAs are found. Branding individual sites as KBAs on the ground KBA designation is applied to a specific site or place. The site may be conserved in many different ways, such as a National Park, a community conserved area, or privately owned reserve. For branding at individual sites, the following considerations apply: Design Elements for a LOGO The KBA partnership feels that the letters “KBA” should be part of the logo. Although this carries the problem of being English letters for a global brand, our initial view is that it would be best to incorporate these letters. However we also do not wish to constrain creativity in the logo design process so would be open to ideas that do not use these letters. We are open to a design that incorporates the letters “KBA” in a way that is severable from the design element. The logo should focus on nature.
