Healthy City/Lipporanta
A large campus-like construction project located in the city of Oulu in Finland, Northern Europe
Brief Overview
The issue at hand is a large campus-like construction project to be situated in the city of Oulu in Finland, Northern Europe (10-12 large buildings, construction work schedule 2012-2018). The area constitutes an aggregate of city living, welfare services and business premises. A new living-concept is being developed in the area - a health park that brings welfare service providers and those in need of them closer to one another.
The different functions of the area are linked together through well-being and health, social contact and natural interaction between different generations. The interactive construction method of the area promotes social contact, the use of services and social well-being.
Similar comprehensive co-ordination of functions in construction work has not been previously realised in Finland.
Services that are to be situated in the area are among others, a shared reception office for the area, a convenience store, a day-care centre, a restaurant, a café, an e-library, a gym, a welfare and beauty salon, physical therapy services, physician’s and nurse’s services. A special emphasis has been placed on e-functionality and the internet in planning the services.
The geographical location of the area is part of the historical centre of Oulu. These days the river delta that was once occupied by tar merchants, shipowners and fishermen serves as the most distinguished recreation area in Oulu. The new construction project will return the area to its rightful status both functionally and as a part of the townscape.
The park in the area borders on the water-front of the Oulu River delta. Pedestrian bridges, cycleways, a sports stadium and public swimming pools, canoeing and exercise routes, marinas, a nationally significant beach and a spa hotel as well as city-like services are all located a stone's throw from the area. (See attached picture 1)
The name of the area is Lipporanta. The logo competition refers to the name of the mentioned area.
Brand Name
Lipporanta
The name Lipporanta, is formulated from the two Finnish words lippo and ranta.
The word lippo refers to the action of lippoaminen, or hand netting, an old fishing method in which the fishing implement is a thinly knit net (called a lippo) on the end of a long pole. The lippo is run downstream near the bottom of the river. When a whitefish swims upstream, it gets caught in the net. Hand netting is also used to catch other fish, such as (smelt and river lamprey). (See attached pictures 3 and 4)
The word ranta means a beach or shore in Finnish, and in this particular context it means specifically the beach or shore in direct vicinity of the Oulu River delta.
The name (brand) Lipporanta has been comprised on both geographical and historical bases.
The project area is near the beach and there is an easy access from the area to the beach. (See attached picture 1)
The term lippoaminen has a geographical significance as well, since hand netting has been traditionally practised in the direct vicinity of the area, by the riverbank.
The geographical map of the construction area also forms a shape of the fishing implement, lippo. (See attached pictures 1 and 2)
The action of lippoaminen also has historical significance, as it is a traditional fishing method. Even today, people are hand netting in the area, and the caught whitefish are shared among the fishermen with old-time rituals.
Target Audience
The primary sales demographic for the apartments are the working population, the aging population from 45 and upwards, retired, active and health conscious people as well as families.
Residents who prefer to live in the direct vicinity of the city centre, near services, ones who are active and appreciate the possibility for natural social interaction.
Living in the Lipporanta area is the answer to the needs of urbanisation and the increase in well-being activities. The emergence of the larger age groups as well as a general increase in wealth, support the phenomenon.
Requirements
The logo we are searching for will serve first and foremost as the name and logo of the residential area (Lipporanta). The logo should symbolise/describe high quality living amidst all services, social action and comfort - in a modern way.
On the map, the area is shaped like a lippo, the history and geographical location of the area refers to the fishing method lippoaminen (hand netting), and in fact the lippo is used to catch whitefish "just as the Lipporanta area with its services is used to catch a resident” - therefore the fishing implement figure should be considered as at least one option in the different versions of the logo.
