As I describe this logo project I'll refer to pages in a PDF which you can download which has reference art.
PDF Reference File: https://goo.gl/LL7KDq
The logo should remind consumers about the old 1970s roleplaying products. Ways that you can tie back to these 1970s tabletop games:
1) Be reminiscent of dungeon blueprints. You can see an example of this on PDF page 4.
2) Be reminiscent of D&D products produced by the now-defunct company 'TSR'. You can see the TSR logo at the bottom of PDF page 5, and worked into various logo designs on PDF page 6.
3) Be reminiscent of 6-sided dice (one or two of them), see PDF page 7.
4) Be reminiscent of hexagons. Hexagons were used in old roleplaying game maps (see top of PDF page 8). See PDF page 8 bottom for an example of a logo using hexes.
All this being said, it COULD be that some version of a Comet might work best instead of the above themes ;-)
Other logos I like are on PDF page 9.
I mocked up an example of what the logo could look like on PDF page 11, though I'm very interested in other ideas.
BOX SET AND BOOKLET USES:
See PDFs pages 10, 12-14 for a Sci Fi box set game sized at 6x9" for one place I'll need to put the logo.
See PDFs pages 15-16 for a Fantasy box set game sized at 6x9" for another place I'll need to put the logo.
See PDFs pages 17-18 for a Fantasy game booklet (sold separately) sized at 8.5x11" for yet another place I'll need to put the logo.
FONT: All the Rogue Comet products will use Open Sans Font (download for free at https://www.google.com/fonts#UsePla…ction:Open. So the logo should look good the Open Sans font, even if you don't use Open Sans.
SIZE: The logo will sometimes have to be very small -- in some cases less than 0.5 inches tall -- in order to fit on products such as the 6x9" box set. In the mockups on PDF pages 12-14 I'm using Open Sans 24 pt font for the 'Rogue Comet' text.
FLAT vs. 3D: I suspect an iconic, flat look (as opposed to a simulated 3D look) will work better at this small size, but I am open to other treatments.
DIFFERENT COLORS: I will be using the logo on products which have color themes on them (red, blue, yellow, and green). I would like the logo to look good with these different color themes, which might mean the logo itself should change color to match the different presentations. See PDF pages 12-14 for examples.
FILE FORMAT: I would like vector format art and the source file for the art in of whatever tool you use so that I can use Illustrator, Inscape or similar tool resize the logo, recolor it, etc., after I get the final file.
