Alberta Soccer got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Alberta Soccer Provincials Logo
Check out Alberta Soccer's Logo design contest…
Alberta Soccer is the governing body for soccer in Alberta. We are seeking a logo design to specifically brand our Provincial Championships. Vision: Stimulating competition, optimum performance, safe and fun for all. Mission: Provincial Championships provide a welcoming, inclusive, energetic and stimulating stage for Alberta Soccer’s premier participants to compete, perform and grow in a safe and fun season-culminating event. Provincial Championships see an average of 6000+ participants across 96 unique competitions annually. Youth participants aged 12 – 17 and Senior participants aged 18+ compete in leagues throughout November-March and May-August for the chance to represent their club at our annual indoor and outdoor Provincial Championships, respectively. Winners of our top outdoor competitions go on to represent the Province on the National stage at Canada Soccer National Championships each October. Our brand design should represent the vision and mission and the three strategic pillars of our Provincial Championships, which are 1) prioritize fun 2) provide physically, mentally, psychologically safe environments 3) ensure developmentally appropriate, high quality programs. The logo will be used on our website and all communications, but primarily as an image on merchandise that is sold at each of our competitions. Merchandise sales (hoodies, t-shirts, toques, etc.) are significant at these competitions and the logo should encapsulate the excitement and prestige of attending the Provincial Championships and be an image that participants (primarily aged 12-25) will proudly wear on a regular basis. The logo could incorporate elements of soccer (a ball, net, etc. but not a player as it needs to be universally appealing and relatable to our diverse participants), as well as elements of our Province (Province shape, mountains, prairies, wild rose, etc.) and Championship (cup/trophy, medal, awards, etc.). The logo must identify that it is “Alberta Soccer Provincial Championships”. Unlike the sample files, we would like the logo to be long-lasting rather than changing the logo each year going forward, therefore the year need not be incorporated into the logo, however the year will be printed with the logo, therefore room to indicate the competition year should be considered. It needs to be exciting but have an understated quality, so that participants will purchase Provincial Championships merchandise with this same branding, year after year. The logo should be considerate of printing constraints, limiting the number of colours used. Options that are adaptable to black and white and/or a single color are preferential. The appendix here includes the images that have been used for the past four years, for reference purposes only. We would like the to be unique and new; something fresh that will stand the test of time, as ideally we would like to brand the Provincial Championships around this new image.
Every design category has flexible pricing for all budgets. Logo design starts at US$299.

And then… they selected a winner!
My design came to life, just from a small sketch and a few color ideas. The designers were very open to adjustments and together we created something that exceeded all my expectations.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
