fogg.erik got their new illustration or graphics by running a design contest:
Create professional, accessible data visualization for a book to help the American political system

We're a media company that's devoted to bringing a more rational, problem-solving approach to US politics. Our first book, "Wedged," helps American citizens understand that they're being emotionally manipulated into voting on "wedge issues," rather than holding politicians accountable to the core priorities for the country. The book will be published in October (hopefully). You can learn more about us at http://www.somethingtoconsidermovement.com
What's your vision?
We have a ton of data in graphs--bar, line, etc. We've also got a few tables. They're all currently quite amateur. We're actually looking for someone to take all of our current graphs/charts, and re-make them with a consistent, beautiful, professional feel. We're looking for a scheme that's understated, a bit academic, and minimalist. We like the look and feel of Pew and Gallup polls (attached). If it helps, our book cover is also attached. The color scheme and font do _not_ have to match the cover at all, but orange is a theme for us. (Red and blue are also good given that we're dealing with a lot of left/right politics.) Ultimately we want to find someone that can do all the graphs and charts in the book. The contest is a talent hunt. THE SPECIFICS: We want to get a sense of what you can do with a few formats, so we have 4 graphics. Luckily, they're pretty simple graphs and charts, so the work burden beyond choosing the right theme should be pretty low. We've attached 3 graphs and 1 table, and we'd like to see a package with all of them to see thematic consistency. What's included: 1) A bar graph we made in excel about Americans' top priorities from a poll. 2) A bar graph from Pew that shows political activism versus ideological extremism. 3) A line graph that shows a Gallup poll over time about gun control. 4) A table that shows a sampling of drivers of premature death. (Note the 5th attachment is a draft book cover) What's critical is that the designs not look like they're Pew or Gallup, nor just a standard MS Office output: we're very allowed to use their data freely, but not only do we want to avoid copyright infringement risks, but we also want to have our own fundamental style that's internally harmonious. FINALLY: We'll need the raw versions of the graphs/tables you make for book design/layout, and just in case our editor wants us to tweak the chart titles, axis titles, etc.
We're big on providing feedback and answering questions. I'm not a designer, so I know the information I've provided could probably be more helpful. Ultimately, we're looking for someone to do the entire book, which has a few dozen graphics. The winner of the contest will have "first right" to a contract to do that work. Ultimately, we're also looking for a long-term partner: we're hoping to be publishing 3 books per year (or so) and would like someone who can consistently work with us for that work. Please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm quick to reply. Part of what we're looking for is someone we really enjoy working with. Cheers, Erik, for MidTide

Stella is totally and utterly AMAZING. She's so helpful, responsive and really efficient. She listened to everything I wanted and also advised me as well. I've worked on a project with Stella in the past also and I'll be working with her again and again. Thank you!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
