Develop a tower defense game for iPad
What's your vision?
Concept art for a tower defense game for iPad Inspired by the famous online game Desktop Tower Defense DTD /, I am planning to create a game of the tower defense genre for iPad. You can play DTD here - but note that I am only addicted and not affiliated to either the website or the game itself. = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_Tower_Defense = http://i.imgur.com/P7dxrCt.png?1 = http://www.arcadeboss.com/game-1757-9-Desktop-Tower-Defense-15.html What I am looking for now is a concept art of the (A) graphic style, (B) the setting and (C) the items of this game - the basic game play will be similar. I respect the creator of DTD, so do not copy any graphical element from his game for your own submissions. THERE WILL BE 2 AWARDS! One will be for a concept that comes closest to something I could immediately use (i.e. best idea & best execution). Another award will be for the best idea alone. For the latter I do not care about execution at all. If you can’t draw, it does not matter. All that counts is the idea. All participants should feel encouraged to build on others’ ideas and use them for their own work. Main instructions: A complete submission for the first award should contain - an examplary game scene (including user interface elements like menu, buttons, …) - at least 5 types of “towers” and their “bullets” separately - at least 5 types of “critters” separately What is fixed: - Everything in the game will be seen from a top view - All towers will have a quadratic base of identical size - If possible, avoid designing critters that have to move legs, flap wings if possible (as this makes animation very complex) - The game is in landscape format. For sketching you may find it helpful to use iPad templates like this one here: http://maxdicapua.tumblr.com/post/3619140813/ipad-2-psd (apparently completely free for use; I am not affiliated) or here: http://lab.3fl.jp/ipad-idea-sheet-v01/ (not affiliated) - EDIT: Please do not use predetermined roads - I would like to stick with the idea that the user implicitly creates roads by placing towers on the ground. I am sorry, I was not precise. - EDIT: Please stick with the grid logic of Desktop Tower Defense, i.e. the ground is divided into little squares (at least when placing a tower this should be a visible restriction) and a tower uses up a square base of 4 little squares.
Brainstorming initial ideas: You can freely choose (A) the style of the game: - Do you think the whole scenery should look like a rough sketch drawn by black fineliners on white ground? - Should it look like water colour? - Should it look like street art stencils? - Should it look like it was made in a 3D modelling software by an Apple designer? ... You can freely choose (B) the setting of the game: - Should the game play in the Middle Ages? - Should the setting resemble a SciFi movie? - Or does it look like it could have originated from the mind of a creative 5-year-old? - Given your decision, how does the ground look like? … You can freely design (C) the items of the game (“towers”, “bullets”, “critters”): - “Towers”, “bullets”, “critters” are just the roles of the items in the game - they can look totally different, e.g. bullets can be cannonballs or laser beams or arrows or ... - Given your previous decision, how do the items within the game look like? - “Towers” and “bullets” “Towers” will have different properties (range, firing speed, damage, towers that paralyse or slow down motion, ability to attack flying objects, ability to turn critters against other critters, single bullets vs. damage done to an area, poisonous bullets that damage for a period of time, …) Feel free to invent new types of “towers”... How can you indicate their behaviour/properties by their outer appearance? How do towers and bullets change when the tower is upgraded? - “Critters” “Critters” will have different properties (speed; some might burst into multiple smaller critters when hit; ability to fly; immunity to certain abilities of towers; ability to attack towers; …) Feel free to invent new types of “critters”... How do the different critters look like? Cute monsters, simple geometric shapes, … How can you indicate their behaviour/properties by their outer appearance?
