We are a collective of iPhone software developers who have been building confidential, private label apps for clients for as long as the SDK has been out (in some cases, longer).
Our upcoming iPhone app, gogoDocs, is a labor of love - an experiment and a calling card we can finally distribute under our brand name and point to publicly.
gogoDocs allows you to synch. and view all your Google Docs documents on your iPhone. It's not the first app. out that lets you do this, but we're pretty sure it will be the best.
Our target market is pretty broad since our application complements Google Docs, which is pretty general purpose.
So on the one hand, we would like customers relying on the app for daily use or business to trust it. On the other hand, anyone relying significantly on Google Docs is probably somewhat forward thinking and gets the spirit of modern web applications and independently produced software.
Our target audience is (by definition) early adopters who like using cloud-based tools. They are hyper-connected, already have a ton of apps on their phone, and are looking for the next cool, useful thing.
In the tradition of useful indie utilities, we are looking for something polished and well-executed that conveys a little bit of fun. See for example Panic software's excellent app. icons for their amazing Mac utilities: http://www.panic.com/
The name 'gogoDocs' is inspired by three ideas:
* Evocative of Google Docs, which the app. complements
* Speaks to the portability gained by using the application to take your documents with you
* Reminds us of the old Inspector Gadget cartoon catchphrase "Go Go Gadget <gadget name>"
We could imagine a logo that's subtly inspired by the Inspector Gadget reference, something robotic or mechanical making your documents emerge (a hand, a gear, a spring?).
But maybe you have better ideas. Use your imaginations.
Please design an application icon for gogoDocs at these resolutions:
- 512x512 (app store)
- 57x57 (iPhone)
If you just resize the 512x512 icon to be 57x57, touch up any details lost in smaller icon for final submission. The 57x57 icon's appearance is the highest priority.
The icon must match iPhone UI guidelines and look good when sitting next to Apple's iPhone icons (feel free to show w/ fake screenshot). Icon should be:
* Square (content inside square can be round).
* Face the screen head on, not sideways.
* Have light source (if any) coming from top.
* Look good / visible on a black background (iPhone) and light gray (for AppStore)
SEE LONG COMMENT FROM US FOR MORE FEEDBACK AND IDEAS
We seem to be tending towards 3D objects on either a simple background or a black background that disappears so it 'floats'. We are definitely open to other styles of icon.
If it helps your design, you can simulate the shine/rounding, e.g.:
Just remember final assets need to be square (can be a non-square object on a square background) for our submission.
In addition to the final images, we'll need the PSD or illustrator file to integrate the icon into the application.
Finally, if there are any visual elements you create (such as a mechanical part), please include them separately so we can potentially reuse them elsewhere within the app.
Thanks in advance for your efforts and creative energy!
We're looking to provide good feedback.
