What's your vision?
We would like to have designed the front cover for our forthcoming health book. Here are the basic specs: title = Designed to Move subtitle = A Science-Backed Program to Fight Sitting Disease and Reverse Aging byline = Dr. Joan Vernikos, author of "Sitting Kills, Moving Heals" trim size = 6 inches wide by 9 inches tall Details: “Designed to Move” is a health book that presents a program to protect readers from the dangers of sitting disease. The target audience is educated, well-informed office workers aged 25 to 65, most likely working in technology and media fields. Sitting disease has been getting a great deal of media coverage for several years, so we assume that our target audience is familiar with the concept of sitting disease. This book is written for people who are aware of the problem and are looking for a solution. The book’s central message is that many health problems, including most health problems associated with aging, are caused by sedentary lifestyles, and that frequent low-impact movement throughout the day is absolutely essential for good health. Being fit and strong is great, but everyday low-impact movement, like standing up every 30 minutes, is more important for health. For the cover design, we would like a clean, no-nonsense cover designed to appeal to readers who think of themselves as rational thinkers and are attracted to science. The design should be oriented more toward conveying information than evoking a mood. For specific imagery, we’d like an abstract illustration of a generic human body in a standing posture suggesting movement. The figure should be as abstract as possible to avoid alienating any potential reader. The movement should be low-impact, like walking, standing, or stretching—this book is very much NOT about athleticism, and we’d like to avoid images that suggest conventional exercise. We’re thinking about using the tagline “Your body is designed to move,” and it might be nice to incorporate that into the title design, with “Your body is” is smaller print above the book title, “Designed to Move.”

It was a pleasure working with Kristin and I intend to use her for my book covers going forward. I loved her concept, the way she portrayed my character, the background and the care she took to make sure that the branding of this cover was consistent with previous ones, done by my publisher's now retired cover artist. She was prompt in making changes and open to suggestion. I'm looking forward to a continued professional relationship.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
