mattpub got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Create a great cover for my book 'When Computing Got Personal'
Check out mattpub's Book cover contest…
I'm looking for a cover for a book I've just completed entitled 'When Computing Got Personal: A history of the desktop computer', which is to be published in both Kindle eBook and paperback editions. The book is intended for the general public, and is no more academic or technical than it has to be to tell the story. It is designed to appeal to a similar audience to that of the recent Steve Jobs or Alan Turing biographies.
What's your vision?
Deliverables as follows: 1. Full colour cover image suitable for Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) measuring 1500 by 2250 pixels. Image must also be effective in monochrome, and at the small sizes displayed on the Amazon website. 2. Full colour PDF of front and back covers and spine for the 6 by 9 inch paperback edition, suitable for upload to both CreateSpace and Lightning Source. The back cover needs space for the barcode and should include the publishers logo (attached in TIFF and EPS format). Page count is estimated at 304 and the interior will use white paper, which suggests a spine of 0.685 inches. 3. Copies of the original files, i.e. the InDesign or Photoshop file and the original full resolution image files. Back cover copy as follows: This is the story of how a handful of geeks and mavericks dragged the computer out of corporate back rooms and laboratories and into our living rooms and offices. It is a tale not only of extraordinary innovation and vision but also of cunning business deals, boardroom tantrums and acrimonious lawsuits. Here you will find some of the most intelligent and eccentric people you could hope to meet, including wide-eyed hippies, subversive students, computer nerds, entrepreneurs, hackers, crackers and financial backers. Some lost out and some became millionaires, but all played a part in transforming our world. Matt Nicholson has been a computer journalist since 1983 and has edited a number of popular newsstand magazines including PC Plus and What Micro?
The front cover needs to be fairly clean and uncluttered, particularly if it is to grab attention on the Amazon website. These are some of my ideas, but I'm open to suggestions: 1. I have obtained permission from IBM to use the attached image of the IBM PC, which was used in the original advertising campaign for the IBM PC. This is particularly appropriate as the IBM PC is an important part of the story, while the red rose enhances the 'personal' detail and adds a splash of colour. I also attach a PDF of a front cover I put together using this image. It's got a simplicity that I like but you can see why I'm looking for something more professional! 2. The mouse is another image that brings out the 'personal' theme, and I attach a PDF with links to a number of images that I like from the 123RF website. 3. An abstract grid or pattern of ones (1) and zeros (0) that contains the suggestion of a smile or a smiling face. 4. An image of a printed circuit board showing an early microprocessor (the device that made the desktop computer possible). A suitable image is at http://www.happytrees.org/chips?page=board&manuf=Intel&name=MCS_80_System_Design_Kit (This is available under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 licence.) I also attach another which I believe belongs to Intel, and I should be able to obtain permission to use it.

Responsive, intuitive, excellent to work with. I'm so grateful for Poppins work on my book cover. Right from the first concept, she seemed to "get" this project and was relentless in getting the design exactly right. A pleasure to work with throughout. I can't highly recommend her enough. Thank you!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
