How forresterfx started their book cover journey
Learning to Fly: a joyous story about depression
David E Forrester
I am a self-publishing author looking to put a book out in the world that will help fellow depressives. Learning to Fly started out as a letter my therapist asked me to write for my son telling him about my depression. But as I was writing the letter, I realised that I had a much larger story to tell the could help others.
The book chronicles the journey of the protagonist, Pete, out of depression as he tries to mend his marriage, bond with his son and rebuild his life. The journey is heart breaking, hopeful and sometimes humorous, so Learning to Fly is less dark than other books about mental illness. It ultimately has an uplifting message about the choices we can make to build a life worth living.
I am aiming at readers who are suffering or have suffered from depression or know someone who is suffering from depression.

What colors do you want to see in your design?
The imagery should attract the viewer by being evocative, eye catching and not overly literal with respect to the title. The idea of the book is that learning to be happy is nearly as difficult for some people as learning to fly, but that it is possible. Here are a few words that come to mind when thinking of my book: depression, struggle, ascension, victory.
In terms of colour, I’m thinking a cover in black and white or sepia.
The title and subtitle should be large, bold and upfront and the author’s name down the bottom.
I will also need a 3D cover and cover artwork without text to use for publicity on social media.
