The first two books in the series can be seen in the samples below. (A Man With One of Those Faces & The Day That Never Comes). They used a colour pallet of red, black and white - I would like to retain that, but as this book is a prequel, perhaps the main colour of the background could be black instead of red.
The cover needs to see thriller and I am looking for a classic pulp feel to it. The book as a strong comedic element to it so a touch of whimsy to the cover design would be great.
Most importantly, it will need to work as a thumbnail on Amazon as that is how readers will most likely firstly come into contact with it.
The name is quite long and it should be very prominent in the design.
While I'm very open to any ideas you have, here are a few possibilities of things to consider: Please note, these are only suggestions - we are very keen to see any ideas you have and are more than happy to answer any questions you'd like to ask before attempting a design.
1/ We like the idea of a pair of angels wings either being used as a silhouette that the name can appear in(as in the cover for A Man With One of Those Faces) or as an object that appears on the cover. angels wings are great but we do not want an actual angel as that would make it look more like a fantasy book. Think of the wings as a physical pair of wings like you would have on a costume.
2/ A shovel and a hole in the ground could work as something that appears beside the name.
3/ A derringer pistol is also featured in the story.
4/ The central character, detective Bunny McGarry is a big man, think Liam Neeson. He wears a large black overcoat and he often carries a hurling stick - which is a piece of Irish sports equipment, see picture below.
Again, these are just suggestions and certainly don't try and include them all as that would be very cluttered.
Think classic noir covers like you would see on a Raymond Chandler or Patricia Highsmith novel, and always keep in mind that it is a crime thriller with a darkly comic sensibility.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me. I will provide speedy and detailed feedback as I know it'll make your job easier and a better cover as a result.
